Growing up in world where everyone tells kids how they should dress, act and be, it is hard to find acceptable uniqueness outside of a norm that people have set up for society. Heavy Metal has definitely stepped outside of that boundary in every possible way. Heavy Metal bands have taken society's standards of a teenager, and taken it 4 steps further with this musical revolution that began in the late 60's. Now, being a metal head has become a group one is put into in order to "blend in" with those also in the group.
Heavy Metal has been viewed as "bad" genre of music by those outside of its fan base. They believe this to be true because since its beginnings, heavy metal has pushed limits with its lyrics, the makeup, and the "heaviness" of music that it portrays. Extreme Christians and other religious people target metal as a "sin" making the fans seem as if they are devil-worshippers and steering away from God. Most of the studies mentioned before come to one conclusion, that heavy metal music makes adolescents and all of its fans rebel against society and its standards. Metal music increases aggression and tendency to do drugs which is why many people are even more against it. The study done by Baker stating the value of having such a strong group of people to relate to actually helps adolescents grow as people shines a positive light on heavy metal by stating a point that most people forget about. Since heavy metal fans have a large prejudice against them, this allows them to unite into one group to have people to relate to. The fault of heavy metal is mostly the stereotype behind the whole metal scene. The studies conducted put more pressure on heavy metal listeners because people have preconception on what heavy metal is. Usually people believe that it is bad music meant to lash out and put incomplete and dangerous thoughts therefore making the idea that heavy metal music is bad. |
